About Me

I'm a PhD scholar in the Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Delhi, working with Prof. Abhijeet Raj. My research sits at the intersection of combustion, transport phenomena, and reactor engineering in flow systems, combining experiments with computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

A central part of my PhD work is a CFD study of soot formation, transport, and oxidation inside a 250 MW pulverized-coal boiler, modelled entirely within the existing boiler geometry in ANSYS Fluent, identifying operating and fuel-related parameters that substantially cut soot output without capital investment or loss of boiler efficiency.

Earlier, during my M.Tech at CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory, Pune (under Dr. Amol A. Kulkarni), I studied the hydrodynamics of a five-coil spiral reactor and a pilot-scale continuous-flow process for mesoporous silica particle synthesis.

Research Themes

Combustion CFD and soot/pollutant control in utility boilers

  • CFD modelling (ANSYS Fluent) of soot formation, transport, and oxidation in a 250 MW pulverized-coal boiler, using the Discrete Phase Model, Moss-Brooke’s soot model, and DO radiation with the Weighted Sum of Gray Gases method
  • Parametric optimization to reduce soot at constant boiler efficiency
  • Linking coal fuel properties and operating load to soot yield and furnace exit temperature

Reactor engineering and continuous-flow process intensification

  • Hydrodynamics and mass transfer in helical/spiral coil reactors; identification of Dean-vortex flow-regime transitions
  • Liquid–liquid two-phase mass-transfer performance benchmarked against static mixers and agitated contactors
  • Continuous-flow, pilot-scale synthesis of mesoporous silica particles: reactor design, fabrication, and hydrodynamic characterization for scale-up

CFD and multiphase/particulate flow modelling for emission control

  • CFD coupled with discrete-phase modelling of particle-laden, pulsing exhaust flow
  • Effect of duct geometry (sinusoidal vs. straight) on particle clustering, coagulation, and pressure drop
  • Parametric study of duct wavelength, amplitude, Reynolds number, and pulsation frequency on particulate emission
Technical Skills
  • Process / CFD simulation: ANSYS Fluent (turbulence, discrete phase, combustion, soot, and radiation modelling)
  • Programming / Modelling: MATLAB, C/C++
  • Experimental: Spiral coil reactor set-up and residence-time-distribution (RTD) experiments; mesoporous silica particle synthesis (soft-template/Stöber-based route); pilot-scale reactor design and fabrication
  • Analysis: Hydrodynamic characterization; mass-transfer analysis; multiphase and particulate flow analysis
